In Ethiopia, particularly in Harar and Mekelle, a unique relationship is developing between humans and hyenas. Abbas Yusuf and other “hyena men” traditionally feed wild hyenas, viewing them as welcome guests and contributing to their well-being. Simultaneously, research led by Dr. Gidey Yirga demonstrates that urban hyenas, like other scavengers, play a vital role in waste management, reducing environmental impact and even contributing to public health. Despite a long-standing negative perception of hyenas, this research highlights their potential ecological benefits and the importance of understanding and fostering coexistence, though challenges like urban sprawl and historical biases threaten this delicate balance.
