Курди: Борба за правата
The Kurdish people, an ethnic minority spread across parts of Iran, Turkey, Iraq, Syria, and Armenia, number between 25 and 45 million globally. Historically divided after World War I by Western powers, they’ve faced decades of struggle for autonomy and rights, often met with repression by their host governments. Significant Kurdish populations exist in Turkey (largest minority, ~20%), Iran (estimated 8-17%), and Iraq (15-20%), with a substantial group in Syria. The Republic of Mahabad, a short-lived Kurdish republic in Iran, was established in 1946 but quickly suppressed. Ongoing conflicts, particularly with the PKK in Turkey, have resulted in significant casualties. The Kurdish regions in Iraq have a semi-autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government, while in Syria, the SDF, backed by the US, played a crucial role in combating ISIS. Despite these efforts, the US support for Kurdish autonomy has been inconsistent and often withdrawn as geopolitical priorities shift. Concerns remain about potential US involvement in supporting Kurdish groups, particularly in Iran, alongside potential risks and anxieties expressed by Kurdish leaders regarding their role as “guns for hire.”
